Ask the Desk
Ask anything about buying, selling, mortgages or the market. The Desk answers only from what we’ve published, with a link to the article or data behind every sentence. If we haven’t covered it, it says so instead of guessing.
Answers come only from our own published articles and data, with a link to the source for every claim. They can still be wrong, so check the source before you act, and talk to a licensed professional about your own situation. We keep the questions people ask (no names, no IP addresses) to see what to write about next.
How it works
- Your question is matched against every article, state market report and data page on this site.
- The most relevant passages, and only those, go to an AI model (OpenAI’s GPT-4o mini) with strict instructions: answer from these passages, cite each one, and say so when they don’t cover the question.
- We check the answer before showing it. An answer that doesn’t cite one of our pages is thrown out and replaced with “we haven’t covered that.”
Numbers come with the date they’re from. Our articles are dated and some figures move weekly, so for today’s rates see this week’s housing numbers.
What it won’t do
- Give personal financial, legal or tax advice. It explains the trade-offs our articles cover; a licensed professional should weigh your own situation.
- Recommend one brokerage over another. Firms in our directory are independently owned and not affiliated with us.
- Ask for your email. There’s no account and no follow-up.
Privacy: we store the text of questions, without names or IP addresses, so we can see what readers want covered. Visitor limits use a one-way hash of your network address that can’t be turned back into it. Don’t put personal details in your question. See our editorial guidelines.
